Friday Focus: From believing to achieving

Former president Theodore Roosevelt once said "Believe you can and you're halfway there." As encouraging (and true!) as those words are, being halfway there can be a difficult place to be. We are in the midst of institutional transformation at 黑料黑历史. We have big goals at 黑料黑历史, and I believe they are within reach. Increasing enrollment, establishing a welcoming Main Street, achieving R1, and building the Troth Yeddha' Indigenous Studies Center. It's exciting stuff! But it's going to take hard work, optimism, and creativity to get us past the halfway point - from believing to achieving. Continue reading this week's Friday Focus.


Nanook Hockey Tailgate on Feb. 1

Join us at Latitude 65 Brewing Co. on Saturday, Feb. 1 from 5-6:30 p.m. as we boost our enthusiasm to support the Alaska Nanooks Men's Hockey during the Governor's Cup games in the state. Show off your blue and gold attire, and you might win tickets to the game, foam paws, beanies, or Nanook gear. Sign up to win an official jersey the 24-25 Alaska Nanooks signed. It will be given away at the end of the tailgate on Feb. 8. The puck drops at 7:07 p.m. at the Carlson Center!

The public can learn the history, basics and engineering of unmanned aircraft systems through two free online courses offered by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Center for Teaching and Learning. Read more and register for courses.


Limited submission funding opportunity

The Vice Chancellor for Research is soliciting white papers for the NSF 25-521: Materials Innovation Platforms call for proposals. 黑料黑历史 may submit 1 proposal for $18,000,000 to $30,000,000 over a six-year period. White papers are due Feb. 5, 2025.


Writing Center support for graduate students

A valuable resource is available to your students: the 黑料黑历史 Writing Center. The team is here to support students with their writing in any course at any stage, whether they鈥檙e brainstorming, drafting, or revising. CTC culinary program delivers award-winning soup and service

The 黑料黑历史 Community and Technical College's culinary arts and hospitality program won the 2025 Golden Ladle at the Soup Off, a fundraiser for Bread Line, a Fairbanks nonprofit fighting hunger. Students gain hands-on experience through events like Borealis Bistro, the CTC food truck, culinary camps, and the HooDoo Choo Choo train ride, while actively serving the Fairbanks community.
