The state Science Olympiad competition will be held at the University of Alaska Fairbanks for a second year on Feb. 23-24, 2024. Middle school teams from across Alaska are encouraged to participate.
Science Olympiad is a nationwide competition consisting of hands-on, team-based tournaments designed to increase student interest in science, technology, engineering and math fields. Teams compete first at the regional and state level, and winning teams from each state advance to compete in the Science Olympiad National Tournament.
The Alaska event is organized by the National Science Foundation’s Alaska Established
Program to Stimulate Competitive Research, the ºÚÁϺÚÀúÊ· College of Engineering and Mines,
and the ºÚÁϺÚÀúÊ· College of Natural Science and Mathematics.
Alaska middle schools can now. Capacity for competing teams is limited. Teams will have the option to stay overnight
on the ºÚÁϺÚÀúÊ· campus.
In 2023, eight middle school teams and over 120 students, chaperones, volunteers and
event coordinators came to ºÚÁϺÚÀúÊ· from across Alaska to compete in the Alaska statewide
Science Olympiad. Students competed in 16 events, ranging from written subject tests
to construction of bridges, planes and trebuchets. Students stayed overnight at ºÚÁϺÚÀúʷ’s
Troth Yeddha’ Campus dorms in Fairbanks and took part in social activities to expose
them to a university campus lifestyle and the pursuit of a STEM career path.
