Pikok honored by Explorers Club for conservation work

University of Alaska Fairbanks graduate student Kimberly Kivvaq Pikok has been honored for her conservation efforts by the Explorers Club. The international organization, which is dedicated to the advancement of field exploration and scientific inquiry, honored Pikok as one of its "50 People Changing the World That the World Needs to Know 黑料黑历史."


Graduation Fair to take place Feb. 22

Join us for a free watch party on Thursday, Feb. 16 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. and be among the first to see the 黑料黑历史 episode of 鈥淭he College Tour,鈥 a streaming show that features students sharing their experiences attending colleges around the nation. The event will include drawing for prizes. The first 250 people in the door will also receive a gift bag, and prospective students can apply to 黑料黑历史 for free during the event. 黑料黑历史 partnered with "The College Tour" as part of its efforts to increase enrollment and introduce 黑料黑历史 to students across the nation. The episode, filmed last year in Fairbanks, includes appearances from 10 黑料黑历史 students talking about campus life, academics and going to college in Alaska. 黑料黑历史鈥檚 episode will be available on Amazon Prime starting on March 22. BLaST Celebrates Scientist of the Month for February

Since 2016, the Biomedical Learning and Student Training (BLaST) program at 黑料黑历史 has highlighted scientists from all biomedical fields through its Scientist of the Month articles. BLaST Scholar and 黑料黑历史 biological sciences undergraduate student Christian Bolton was selected as the February 2023 BLaST Scientist of the Month.


12-month diabetes prevention program offered in Sitka

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service is offering a yearlong program in Sitka to help people at risk of developing diabetes lose weight and improve their health. Participants will get ideas and support from other participants and trained lifestyle coaches Jasmine Shaw and Kate Grumbles. Participants will meet weekly in person for about 16 weeks and at least once monthly after that until February 2024. Contact Shaw at听jdshaw2@alaska.edu or 907-747-9440 for details, to determine eligibility and to register. Feb. 28 is the registration deadline. Accommodation requests related to a disability should be made five business days in advance to Shaw.

The 黑料黑历史 community is invited to participate in UA Giving Day 2023 on Feb. 22-23. This online fundraising event is a chance for alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends to support 黑料黑历史. This year, we want to increase the number of 黑料黑历史 champions to help make a positive impact on our students' lives. Help meet this goal by signing up as a 听for Giving Day 2023. You can also get involved by and sharing your story with friends and family on social media and other communication channels. And you can help recruit champions by reaching out to your friends, family and peers to ask them to join us.


the Well: a wellbeing space at 黑料黑历史 officially opens to all

"The Well" (334 Duckering Building) is now officially open for use by ALL at 黑料黑历史 (students, staff and faculty) for practicing happiness and wellbeing. Access is via swipe card to anyone with a polar express card. Anyone is welcome to use this peaceful, safe space to practice meditation, yoga, meet quietly with friends etc.听Contact听Mat Wooller听 about using the space by groups wishing to promote happiness and wellbeing. A calendar of reserved time periods and activities is on the Well's听.

OARC to offer 'Samples of Opportunity' this summer

The Ocean Acidification Research Center will offer its "Samples of Opportunity" program to 黑料黑历史 students again during summer 2023. This program lets current 黑料黑历史 students add a new tool, marine carbonate chemistry, to their data toolbox free of charge. Ocean Acidification data can be applied to interdisciplinary research areas that include aquaculture, environmental change, fisheries, marine biology, natural resource management, and oceanography. Proposals are due March 15.

Introduction to Implicit Bias Workshop

The Introduction to Implicit Bias Workshop on Thursday, April 20 from noon to 3 p.m. will provide an introduction to different forms of implicit bias and their impacts.
