Friday Focus: Bright start to 2025

Happy New Year and happy new spring semester! Although the Arctic chill could arrive again at any time, the warm weather and beautiful snowy conditions are making our entry into 2025 one for the books. I hope everyone was able to enjoy a restful winter break and return ready to hit the ground running. It is always a pleasure to see students returning to campus, eager to make a final push through to May's graduation celebration. Continue reading this week's Friday Focus.

CTC automotive program receives ASE reaccreditation

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Community and Technical College automotive training program has earned reaccreditation from the ASE Education Foundation in Maintenance and Light Repair. Learn more about the reaccreditation.


Graduate student teaching resources

Graduate students have the opportunity to enroll in self-paced, micro-courses on essential topics for teaching in higher ed. Upon completion of these online courses, students are awarded microcredentials certifying their new skills. Learn more about courses available.


Handle Complex Accommodation Needs and Conversations

Working with students who present challenges can be demanding, but that鈥檚 often where the most meaningful progress happens. In this informative and interactive webinar, Disability Services staff from all three MAUs will use real-world scenarios to provide faculty and staff with practical strategies and tools. This session on Monday, Jan. 27, at 1 p.m. will be 90 minutes, but we will remain online for discussion and to answer questions as long as needed. Learn more and register for the webinar.

Lisa Slaba announced chancellor's executive assistant and advisor

Lisa Slaba has been hired as the new executive assistant and advisor to the chancellor. In this role, Slaba reports directly to Chancellor Daniel White and provides in-depth assistance to the chancellor on the administration and operations of 黑料黑历史. Learn more about Slaba.

Dr. Rich Collins has announced his resignation as the director of the 黑料黑历史 Graduate School and his intention to return to a tenured faculty position.

The Western Alaska Interdisciplinary Science Conference in 2025, hosted by Alaska Sea Grant, will be held at the Naknek Native Village Council in Naknek, Alaska, from April 15-17. Abstracts can be submitted until Feb. 14, 2025.

New for summer 2025: Registration through Schedule Planner

On Monday, Jan. 27, the University of Alaska will launch registration through Schedule Planner. This will replace the current registration and course search options in UAOnline. Learn more about the change.

Workshop series: Parenting unfiltered

This new workshop series is designed to equip parents and other caregivers of children with knowledge, tools, and empathetic approaches for discussing sensitive topics with children and teens. The poinsettia: taking cues from daylight

For those with holiday lights hung all year and trees still decorated, perhaps pots of poinsettias, with their red, pink or white bracts, still liven up the house. These bracts (the modified leaves mistaken for flowers) turn vibrant colors -- traditionally a bright red -- in midwinter, making an excellent example of the importance of photoperiods. Good course design the best defense against cheating

While the prevalence of academic misconduct is debatable and uncertain, its existence is not. Courses can be designed proactively to reduce cheating, plagiarism and other forms of academic misconduct. Learn more in this teaching tip.
