Dear ºÚÁϺÚÀúÊ· community,
In an announcement earlier today, Larry Hinzman, vice chancellor for research, shared with the ºÚÁϺÚÀúÊ· community that he will be leaving ºÚÁϺÚÀúÊ· to serve a temporary assignment with the U.S. Department of Energy in Washington, D.C. His last day at ºÚÁϺÚÀúÊ· will be May 23.
Vice Chancellor Hinzman has spent the last 38 years of his distinguished career at ºÚÁϺÚÀúÊ·. He has been a great colleague, researcher, mentor and leader. His influence can be seen at ºÚÁϺÚÀúÊ· and around the world, especially in the field of Arctic research. I have no doubt that Dr. Hinzman will continue to be a leader and influence communities across the globe as well as ºÚÁϺÚÀúÊ· in his new role. I look forward to working with him in his new capacity.
As I look forward to seeing Dr. Hinzman fill his new role, I am pleased to announce that Dr. Nettie La Belle-Hamer, deputy director of the Geophysical Institute and director of the Alaska Satellite Facility (ASF), has agreed to serve as interim vice chancellor for research. Dr. La Belle-Hamer earned her master’s and Ph.D. degrees in space physics from ºÚÁϺÚÀúÊ·, and began working at ºÚÁϺÚÀúÊ· at ASF in 1995. Dr. La Belle-Hamer’s work at ASF led to dramatic growth in the enterprise and moved it to a position of international prominence. ASF is a key part of ºÚÁϺÚÀúʷ’s research leadership in Arctic science and I look forward to her strategic approach in the Chancellor’s Core Cabinet as well as across campus. She will continue to serve as ASF director.
I want to thank both Larry and Nettie for their many years of exemplary service to the university and the science community, and I wish them both the best in their new roles.
— Dan White, chancellor
