Floating down the Fortymile River, we saw a cut in the green hills that hinted of a creek. My canoeing partner and neighbor, Ian Carlson, 13, wanted to see a ghost town. The map told us one should be dead ahead.

Community food systems training offered

The Cooperative Extension Service will host trainings Sept. 5-6 on developing community food systems in Alaska. Two trainings will be offered at the Matanuska Experiment Farm in Palmer and by videoconference in Sitka and Fairbanks.

Fairbanks gardening class begins Sept. 24

Registration is open for an eight-week gardening class in Fairbanks taught by master gardener Terry Reichardt. The class will meet Mondays from 6 to 8 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, beginning Sept. 24.
